On the afternoon of November 8, Jean Tirole, winner of the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences 2014, visited Shanghai University of Finance and Economics (SUFE) and gave a lecture titled “Fighting the War against Climate Change” to teachers and students at SUFE.
Prior to the lecture, SUFE Vice President Chen Xinyuan met with Professor Tirole, and Chen Xuanjuan, Executive Dean of Dishui Lake Advanced Finance Institute (SUFE-DAFI), and Ding Dong, Deputy Director of the International Exchange and Cooperation Office at SUFE, attended the meeting. Mr. Chen Xinyuan thanked Professor Tirole for attending and giving a keynote speech at the Inauguration Ceremony ofSUFE-DAFI this May. Mr. Chen also sincerely invited the professor to visit SUFE more frequently. Professor Tirole thanked SUFE for the invitation and expressed his anticipation for more communication with university faculty and students. Afterwards, Mr. Chen Xinyuan and Professor Tirole shared their study experiences and discussed economic topics of interest.

Keen insights into key economic issues related to climate change
Jean Tirole noted during the lecture that the fight against climate change is urgent, believing that the way businesses, the government and the public deal with this issue is based on some “myths,” such as the unfounded optimism about green growth, the blind pursuit of carbon neutrality goals, and so on. He suggested a holistic approach to reconcile these contradictions. Also, Tirole added that there are also difficulties with carbon neutrality actions, including policy opposition, difficulty in unifying carbon emission pricing, and the conundrum that faces individuals participating in carbon reduction actions. After his speech, Professor Jean Tirole answered questions from students, and then took a group photo with the excited audiences. The event was presided over by Executive Dean Chen Xuanjuan.
Professional remarks on frontier economics topics
Following the lecture, Professor Tirole attended the “Face-to-face Seminar with Nobel Laureate in Economics” to speak with young scholars from SUFE.
The seminar was chaired by Shan Chenyu, Associate Professor at the School of Finance, SUFE and participated by Chen Xuanjuan, Executive Dean of SUFE-DAFI, Qiu Jiaping, Visiting Professor at SUFE-DAFI, and young scholars. The three young teachers present introduced their latest research findings, regarding which Professor Tirole raised questions and gave comments one by one, alongside detailed advice.
All of the young teachers said that they benefited a lot from their conversations with Professor Tirole, which inspired them to advance their research.
Professor Jean Tirole is Honorary Chairman of the Foundation JJ Laffont-Toulouse School of Economics and the Institute for Advanced Study in Toulouse, and also a visiting professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He has been granted honorary doctorates by 15 universities around the world and won a number of scientific awards.
The lecture is part of the Dishui Lake Master Forum campaign launched by SUFE-DAFIand also a highlight of the serial events that the Institute has organized in tribute to the 106th Anniversary of SUFE.
